According to a
Radicati Group Study from May 2009, there are about 1.4 billion email users worldwide. That makes a tad more than one in every five persons on the earth use email. In 2013, there are about 1.9 email users are expected worldwide.
Number of emails sent per day (in 2009) is around 247 billion. 247 billion messages per day means more than 2.8 million emails are sent every second. Around 80% of these millions of message are spam, fraud and viruses. The genuine emails are sent by around 1.4 billion email users. Spam, fraud and viruses mails are like:-
Spoofing: E-mail sent from someone pretending to be someone else is known as spoofing. Spoofing may take place in a number of ways. Common to all of them is that the actual sender's name and the origin of the message are concealed or masked from the recipient. Many, if not most, instances of e-mail fraud use at least minimal spoofing, as most frauds are clearly criminal acts. Criminals typically try to avoid easy traceability.
Phishing for data: Some spoof messages purport to be from an existing company, perhaps one with which the intended victim already has a business relationship. The 'bait' in this instance may appear to be a message from 'the fraud department' of, for example, the victim's bank, which asks the customer to: "confirm their information"; "log in to their account"; "create a new password", or similar requests.
Requests for help: The "request for help" type of e-mail fraud takes this form. An e-mail is sent requesting help in some way, but including a reward for this help as a "hook," such as a large amount of money, a treasure, or some artifact of supposedly great value.
Others email frauds are like
Nigerian bank scams,
Sweepstakes,
lottery, and
prize scams,
Pyramid schemes,
Ponzi schemes,
Multilevel marketing (MLM) schemes, etc. Most of these frauds are carried out by people obtaining access to account numbers and passwords. Never respond to any message that asks you to send cash or personal information. You won't receive any riches, and in fact you could get into legal trouble if you become involved with one of these scams.
Fraud emails can be tracked with minimal technique details and sender information can be tracked out. There are two steps involved in tracking of e-mail address. First find the IP address of sender, and track location of IP address. Every device connected to the public Internet is assigned a unique number known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address. IP addresses consist of four numbers separated by periods (also called a 'dotted-quad') and look something like 127.0.0.1. Let us find the location of an email sender in Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail and Outlook with an example.
Yahoo: Log on to your account and open the e-mail.

You need to look into lines that start with “
Received: from”. Ignore 127.0.0.1, because it is default address of machine.

Once you have got the IP address, download the
IP Address Helper Tool from Location mentioned below, and enter Received: From IP address in it.
Hotmail: Log on to your account and open the e-mail. Go to View Message Source and try to look into lines that start with “Received: from”. Ignore 127.0.0.1, because it is default address of machine.

Once you have got the IP address, download the
IP Address Helper Tool from Location mentioned below, and enter Received: From IP address in it.
Gmail: Log on to your account and open the e-mail.
Click on the down arrow that’s to the right of the Reply link. Choose Show Original from the list. You need to look for the lines of text that start with “
Received: from“.

Once you have got the IP address, download the

Outlook: Open the email in Outlook by double-clicking on it. Go to View at the top menu (the menu options for the email, not the main Outlook window) and choose Options. You’ll get a dialog box where you can set the message options and at the bottom you’ll see the Internet Headers box. You need to look for the lines of text that start with “
